# Surface mapper
The surface mapper standalone tool can be used to generate a mapping image for material casting between two arbitrary geometries.
The Surface mapper will generate a MappingImage between two 3D objects.
The normals of the target mesh (or an overridden search direction) is used to define a search direction. It will search for the original mesh along the search direction and map it onto the surface of the target mesh and write the result to a MappingImage.
Once a MappingImage has been generated, materials and data can then be transferred from one mesh to another using the Material casters.
